EXPLANATORY NOTES ON THE PROVISIONAL AGENDA


Item 1 Adoption of the Provisional Agenda (CX/LAC 01/1): The Committee will be invited to adopt the Provisional Agenda as its Agenda for the Session.
Item 2 Matters of Interest to the Committee arising from the Codex Alimentarius Commission and other Codex Committees (CX/LAC 01/2): Matters of interest arising from the 23rd Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Rome, Italy, 28 June - 3 July 1999) and other relevant Codex committees are summarized in the working paper.
Item 3 Report on Food Safety/Food Control Activities of FAO and WHO complementary to the Work of the Codex Alimentarius Commission since the 11th Session of the Committee (CX/LAC 01/3): Selected activities of FAO and WHO complementary to the work of the Codex Alimentarius Commission being undertaken in the Region of Latin America and the Caribbean are summarized in the working paper as well as activities of international bodies relevant to the FAO/WHO food standards work. 
Item 4 Consideration of the Draft Revised Code of Hygienic Practice for Street-Vended Foods(ALINORM 99/36-App. II): The 11th Session of CCLAC (Montevideo, Uruguay, 8-11 December 1998) advanced the above text to the 23rd Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission for adoption at Step 5 and the Commission agreed to this decision. The Draft Revised Code was subsequently circulated for comments at Step 6 under CL 1999/13-GEN by the Codex Secretariat. No comments have been received in response to this document. Consequently, comments are being requested again under CL 2000/42-LAC. Comments submitted at Step 6 are summarized in working document CX/LAC 00/4. 
Item 5 Report on Food Safety Matters of Interest to the Region including contamination by Salmonella and Emerging Pathogens (CX/LAC 01/5): Reports on progress made by countries of the Region on the above matter after the 11th Session of the Committee in response to CL 2000/41-LAC are summarized in the working paper.
Item 6 Harmonization and Cooperation in Food Legislation and Food Control Activities in the Region (CX/LAC 01/6): Reports on progress made by countries of the Region on the above matter after the 11th Session of the Committee in response to CL 2000/41-LAC are summarized in the working paper. 
Item 7 Activities of Codex Contact Points and National Codex Committees in the Region (CX/LAC 01/7): Reports on progress made by countries of the Region on the above matter after the 11th Session of the Committee in response to CL 2000/41-LAC are summarized in the working paper.
Item 8 Consumers' Participation in Codex Work and Related Matters (CX/LAC 01/8): Reports on progress made by countries of the Region on the above matter after the 11th Session of the Committee in response to CL 2000/41-LAC are summarized in the working paper.
Item 9 Report on Risk Analysis Activities in Codex (CX/LAC 01/9): Activities on Risk Analysis in Codex are summarized in the working paper. Reports on the status of the application of risk analysis by countries of the Region in response to CL 2000/41-LAC are summarized in CX/LAC 01/9-Add.1. 
Item 10 Nomination of Coordinator (CX/LAC 01/10): In accordance with Rule II.4 of the Rules of Procedure of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the Committee is invited to nominate a Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean for appointment by the 24th Session of the Commission.
Item 11 Other Business and Future Work: In accordance with Rule V.5 of the Rules of Procedure, any Member of the Commission may propose the inclusion of specific items of an urgent matter. The Committee may propose to undertake new work that shall be in compliance with the Medium Term Objectives and subject to the approval by the Commission or its Executive Committee.
Item 12 Date and Place of the Next Session: The Committee will be advised of the tentative dates of the next session. 
Item 13 Adoption of the Report: In accordance with Rule VIII.1 of the Rules of Procedure, the Committee shall adopt the report of its 12th Session, based on a draft provided by the Codex Secretariat.
