EXPLANATORY NOTES
ON THE PROVISIONAL AGENDA

Item 1 Adoption of the Provisional Agenda (CX/FJ 03/1)
The Task Force will be invited to adopt the Provisional Agenda as its Agenda for the Session.
Item 2 Matters of Interest to the Task Force arising from the Executive Committee of the Codex Alimentarius Commission and other Codex Committees (CX/FJ 03/2)
Matters of interest arising from the Executive Committee of the Codex Alimentarius Commission and other relevant Codex committees are summarized in the working paper.
Item 3(a) Proposed Draft Codex General Standard for Fruit Juices and Nectars (CX/FJ 03/3)
In discussing the proposed draft Codex General Standard for Fruit Juices and Nectars, the 2nd Session of the Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Codex Task Force on Fruit and Vegetable Juices decided to retun the aforesaid document to Step 3 for circulation and further comments. In taking this decision, it agreed to reconvene the Drafting Group of the Task Force with a view to revising the aforesaid document particularly those controversial issues and undecided provisions of the proposed draft Standard based on the written comments submitted at that Session and in response to CL 2002/14-FJ.

The Drafting Group revised the proposed draft Codex General Standard for Fruit Juices and Nectars and prepared a revised text for consideration by the next session of the Task Force. The revised proposed draft Codex General Standard for Fruit Juices and Nectars is being circulated for comments at Step 3. Additional comments on the development of Brix levels for fruit and vegetable juices and nectars are also being requested under CL 2003/2-FJ.

Comments submitted at Step 3 on the proposed draft Codex General Standard for Fruit Juices and Nectars (CX/FJ 03/3) and specific comments on the development of Brix levels for fruit and vegetable juices and nectars (CL 2003/2-FJ) are summarized in working documents CX/FJ 03/3-Add. I and CX/FJ 03/4 respectively.

Item 3(b) Proposed Draft Revised Codex General Standard for Vegetable Juices (ALINORM 03/39-App. III)
The 2nd Session of the Task Force was unable to consider the proposed draft revised Codex General Standard for Vegetable Juices and therefore, it agreed to return it to Step 3 for circulation and further comments. In doing so, the Task Force noted that those recommendations made by the Drafting Group on the proposed draft Codex General Standard for Fruit Juices and Nectars (see CX/FJ 03/3-App. II) which could be applicable to vegetable juices and nectars might facilitate the revision of this Standard.

The Drafting Group of the Task Force discussed whether there was a need to continue work on the revision/updating of this Standard in view of the little trade occurred with these products and in view of the few comments received on the proposed draft revised Codex General Standard for Vegetable Juices in response to CL 2002/14-FJ.

Therefore, comments on the need to work on the revision/updating of a General Standard for Vegetable Juices and Nectars are being requested under CL 2003/3-FJ. For those Member countries and interested international organizations in Observer status with Codex in favour of continuing work on this Standard, comments at Step 3 are also being requested under CL 2003/3-FJ. Comments submitted in response to CL 2003/3-FJ are summarized in working document CX/FJ 03/5.

Specific comments on the development of Brix levels for fruit and vegetable juices and nectars (CL 2003/2-FJ) are summarized in working document CX/FJ 03/4 (see also Item 3(a) as regards CL 2003/2-FJ on the development of Brix levels).

Item 4 Other Business

Item 5 Date and Place of the Next Session
